"Reused in the steps to the altar of Upper Denton Church, 535 m. south of Birdoswald. The capital had been cut off and the sides chiselled down. The wear on the left side indicates its secondary reuse as a threshold. Upon this implements were sharpened. Later, when it was taken to the church, sockets for rails were cut in the back, which was chamfered" (RIB 1894)
