Tekija
/ Roman Transdierna
Old Tekija, similar to Romanian Orsova, had been one of the most important places and transport hubs in this part of the Danube, before the building of HPP Đеrdаp.

Tekija, just like Roman Transdierna 2000 years ago, is located on the same naturally convenient location at the exit of the Lower Gorge canyon on the right bank. It owes its name, referred to in literary sources, to Dierni / Dierna located on the left Romanian bank of the Danube, built near the mouth of Černa / Cerna, a large tributary of the river.

The first and older fort, measuring 100 x 84 m, was constructed in the early first century, on the left bank of the Tekija stream, for the military unit of mixed composition, including the fleet (IX Gemina, Gallorum V). In the period of late antiquity reconstruction, in the fourth century (Diocletian-Constantine I), a smaller, quadrangular fortification measuring 32 x 25 m was built at this location. It was an irregular shape (type quadriburgium), with quadrangular outer towers. Bricks with stamps DARDIANA and D(acia)R(i)P(ensis) DIERNA were found at this location too. The last reconstruction of this castel was in the sixth century, at the time of Justinian I (527-565).

Outside the fortress ramparts, a civil settlement spread for over 600 years, and it is found at several locations.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, a Đerdap River Administration building was built above the newer fort. However, the building and the fort, as well as Old Tekija, were submerged by accumulation of the Danube in 1970.

Finds from this site testify to the importance of this place during the six centuries of Roman and early Byzantine limes. All findings are exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Đerdap in Kladovo.
